FLOOD CONTROL
One of the most important tasks of our association is to provide rapid assistance in the event of flash floods in our region and in the event of prolonged flood defences. Unfortunately, flash floods caused by heavy rainfall have become more frequent recently, especially along the Ipoly River and smaller watercourses in the Nógrád Basin, which can cause serious flooding in a matter of hours. Our trained volunteers can use the available equipment not only to effectively participate in sandbagging and damage repair, but also to help evacuate people from flooded areas.
At our base, we have a trailer-mounted water casualty unit ready to go, with a fleet of specialised flood rapid response suits, life jackets and a rubber-hulled speedboat. If necessary, we are able to bring several high-power slurry pumps and generators to the scene at short notice. If necessary, our divers can also enter and dive flooded culverts, in cooperation with water specialists, and carry out flood protection embankment protection. In Balassagyarmat, we maintain a flood protection warehouse with hundreds of filled sandbags.
The regular training of our members in flood protection and the purchase of equipment for flood protection is supported by the National Directorate General for Disaster Management.
